EMS – What the Future Sounded Like

a great documentary on EMS (Electronic Music Studio), an early group of avantgarde musicians in the 1950´s who engineered electronics for audio and music purposes.

watching this helps me understand what I like about electronic music, that it frees ideas, it´s about exploration. at that time, society did not have something to relate to, culturally, so it was an initial (listening) experience. I still feel that way when I listen to stuff I like.

essential for the experience is that this kind of music does not suit certain “entertainment reception patterns” which many listeners want to satisfy.

I found that in lots of musical genres later, combined with an elitism, love to abstracts of all kinds and something like a “futuristic” attitude, which I always felt sympathy for.

“Music is sound which has been organized” (Tristram Cary)
